With around 125,000 inhabitants, Wolfsburg is the fifth-largest city in Lower Saxony. Since 1988, Wolfsburg has been home to a campus of the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, which was established in 1971 through the merger of the State Engineering School Wolfenbüttel and the Higher Technical School for Social Work of the State of Lower Saxony. Wolfsburg is also home to the AutoUni, a corporate educational institution founded by Volkswagen AG in 2002. In addition to universities, several research institutes are also located in Wolfsburg, including the Institute of Clinical Pathology and the Center for Developmental Diagnostics and Social Pediatrics.
