Landau is an independent city in southern Rhineland-Palatinate. At the end of the 19th century, Landau was the center of the Palatinate wine trade and was considered the wealthiest city in the Palatinate. Even today, Landau is still strongly influenced by viticulture. As the economic and cultural metropolis of the Southern Palatinate, Landau offers a wide range of retail and service providers. Part of the University of Koblenz-Landau, founded in 1990, is located in Landau. Museums, theaters, and historic buildings characterize the cityscape of Landau. These include, for example, several historicist and Art Nouveau buildings along Landau's Ringstraße. Regular events are also an integral part of Landau. One example is the Federweisen festival. This festival was first celebrated in 1953 and, with 100,000 visitors, is the most popular wine festival in the Southern Palatinate. There is also the La.Meko Film Festival, an annual film festival that has been held since 2001. The idea was conceived in 2000 by the Media Education/Communication Psychology Student Council at the University of Koblenz-Landau.
