The University of Duisburg-Essen was formed in 2003 through the merger of the universities of Essen and Duisburg. With 30,000 students, it is one of the largest universities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Duisburg Theater was built in 1912 in the neoclassical style based on a design by Martin Dülfer and is now considered the cultural center of the city of Duisburg.
