Hello
The App Design & Development Conference (ADDC for short) was held for the second time in Barcelona at the beginning of July.
As the name suggests, the content is aimed at both designers and developers. The event is intended to promote the exchange of both professional groups and to show ways in which daily collaboration can be strengthened and improved. The audience of the conference with participants from all over Europe was accordingly broad.
While the first of the three event days consisted of various workshops, the last two days featured talks on topics such as design systems, chatbots and augmented reality. Despite the comparatively young history of the event, the organizers were able to attract speakers from big players such as Google, Facebook and Uber.
The guiding principle of the conference was also the topic of the opening talk by Sara Cambridge, User Experience Researcher at Google, who has worked on the Material Design team there for several years. Since Google's design guidelines are an important part of our daily work at let's dev, it was particularly exciting to get an insight into the processes and procedures of this team. In addition to components such as UI elements and products, workflows are also evaluated and improved there. For example, Cambridge conducted hundreds of interviews with designers and developers to understand what problems arise in the exchange between the two groups. With the simple result that regular and direct communication is the key to successful collaboration. It is also important to be emphatic and show interest in the work of colleagues. In contrast, a lack of appreciation or understanding most often leads to problems. In terms of corporate culture, a level playing field should also be created for both roles.
Cambridge's talk, as well as those of all the other speakers, is available as full-length videos on the ADDC Website.
In many of the talks, the focus was clearly more on design and marketing. A more balanced topic ratio would certainly be a goal for future events. Nevertheless, participation in the ADDC certainly also provided the developers present with valuable insights and a better view of the everyday life of designers. Since the tasks of both professions are directly linked, conferences like the ADDC are valuable platforms for knowledge exchange and help to broaden our horizons and to be able to look at things from other perspectives.
The App Design and Development Conference in Barcelona will enter a third round in summer 2019.
