In addition, Salzgitter has the most active inland port in Lower Saxony in terms of cargo handling. In its current form, Salzgitter has existed since 1942 and is therefore one of the few newly founded cities in Germany in the first half of the 20th century. The nearest cities are Braunschweig, Hildesheim, and Hanover. Since 1993, Salzgitter has been home to a campus of the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, which was established in 1971 through the merger of the State Engineering School Wolfenbüttel and the Higher Technical School for Social Work of the State of Lower Saxony. The registered association Braunschweiger Landschaft counts Salzgitter among its members. The association was founded in 1990 to support cultural institutions in the region.
