Gera is located in the east of Thuringia on the White Elster River. Gera experienced a great economic boom during industrialization as an important center of the fabric and cloth industry. Following the breakup of large socialist enterprises, Gera's economy today is characterized by smaller companies in the automotive supply, optics, environmental technology, and mechanical engineering sectors. Gera is home to a campus of the Gera-Eisenach Cooperative State University, which was founded in 2016 when it was incorporated into Thuringia's Higher Education Act. Almost 1,200 students are currently enrolled at the university's two locations. Courses are offered in the three fields of economics, technology, and social sciences. Theaters, museums, and buildings characterize the cultural landscape of Gera. In 1996, the Gera City Theater merged with the Altenburg State Theater to form the Altenburg-Gera Theater, which has been known as Theater & Philharmonie Thüringen since 2006.
